1 Magistrate
Acts in the same way as a judge, but dealing with a wide range of less serious criminal cases and civil matters. S/he is able to determine whether a defendant is guilty or not and pass the appropriate sentence. Is able to commit more serious cases to the Crown Court. Magistrates sit on a 'bench' of three (an experienced chairman with two other magistrates) and are accompanied in court by a trained legal advisor to give guidance on the law and sentencing options. Magistrates do not wear formal gowns, but appropriate business suiting.
